Grazing Riparian Areas - Introduction

Key Points

1. While each grazing situation is different, there are general principles to consider when planning to graze livestock in any riparian area.

2. Determining an appropriate season of use for grazing a riparian area can be one of the most important steps in successful riparian management.

So far, we have tried to give you enough information to determine what types of streams and riparian areas you might have on your property and how they function. This lesson addresses principles and techniques for grazing your riparian areas. There are numerous techniques which might assist you in achieving specific goals. There are also a few general principles which every operator or land manager should consider before implementing any specific technique. This lesson addresses both principles and techniques.

The material presented in this lesson is covered in more detail in Successful Strategies for Grazing Cattle in Riparian Zones and Caring for the Green Zone, both located in the supplemental materials. Additional publications concerning riparian grazing management are available from your NRCS and County Extension Office.
