The seed tree method is a modification of clear-cutting where a few of
the best trees are left standing to become the parent trees for the new
forest. The seed tree method will leave between 7 and 10 mature healthy
trees per acre. Trees are left widely scattered on the site to provide
seeds for regeneration. These trees should be wind firm, light-seeded
species, like maple and ash. After the next forest becomes established,
the seed trees can be harvested or left as a scattered overstory. If the
seed trees are retained, the stand becomes a two-aged stand.
